The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina would receive full federal recognition under a bill passed by Congress. Now it awaits Trump’s signature.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate vote which could bring the Lumbee Tribe to the doorstep of gaining full federal recognition is scheduled for Tuesday. The Senate will vote on the National Defense Authorization Act, the final version of which includes the Lumbee Fairness Act. The vote is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the U.S. Capitol.

The Indiana Senate will vote on mid-decade redistricting today, capping off a bitter state fight for control of Congress that has divided the GOP, spurred violent threats and dramatically changed the political landscape ahead of the midterm elections.

A wide-ranging defense spending bill, debated by the Senate on Tuesday, would also grant full federal recognition to the Lumbee. The Senate adjourned without a vote and plans to reconvene Wednesday.
